**Pellet**

**Introduction to Iron Ore Pellets**

Iron ore pellets are spherical products made by combining iron ore concentrate with binding agents, followed by forming and firing at high temperatures. Thanks to their good mechanical strength and controlled chemical composition, pellets are one of the most important feed materials for direct reduction units and blast furnaces.

**Pellet Production Process**

In the pelletizing process, iron ore concentrate is first mixed with materials such as bentonite, lime, and water. The mixture is then formed into raw balls using pelletizing discs or drums. These raw pellets are baked and hardened in special furnaces to become fired pellets with proper compressive strength and abrasion resistance.

**Key Features of Pellets**

– High and controlled iron grade
– Suitable mechanical strength for transportation, storage, and furnace charging
– Uniform behavior during reduction or melting
– Reduced dust and improved environmental performance compared to fine iron ore

**Application of Pellets in the Steel Industry**

Pellets are used as the main feed for direct reduction (DRI) plants and, in some cases, blast furnaces. The quality and uniformity of pellets directly affect the efficiency of sponge iron production and energy consumption in steelmaking units.

**Factors Affecting Pellet Prices**

Pellet prices are influenced by iron ore concentrate costs, additive and energy costs, demand from direct reduction plants, as well as transportation and export conditions. In the domestic market, pellet prices are typically determined based on formulas derived from iron ore and concentrate prices.
